The Gate Of Justice

Quillel

World

Cold and barren, deep within permanent cloud coverage. The hidden entrance to the veil — the Cavrous — sits within the Trojiidama Peaks. Ancient. Unmarked. Reachable only by following wild animal paths along cliff faces in near-zero visibility.

Veil

The unexpected opposite of a frozen barren world is warmth. Almost comfortable. Almost inviting. This is the specific wrongness — warmth on a world of ice feels like rescue, and the Gate of Justice cannot be reached by anything that feels like rescue without cost. The ground beneath the warmth is unreliable — not ice, not earth, something between the two that has no name in any known language. Visibility is high — too high, uncomfortably clear, nothing hidden — which makes the Xemaaretti impossible to avoid.

Gate

The Gate of Justice demands the diminishment of expedience as the condition of passage. Each surrender of the convenient answer — each refusal to sacrifice integrity for outcome — is a layer of Solbreth built. Justice is not the same as the greatest good for the greatest number. The gate does not open for the one who has found the cleverest solution. It opens for the one who has held the harder line.

Beings

The Xemaaretti (zem-ah-RET-ee). Upon entrance into the veil, they manifest automatically — emotionless entities of absolute judgment, exacting, final, and swift. They present justice as indelible and incompatible with mercy, kindness, or love. They cannot be pleaded with through emotion or circumstance. They receive only one thing: an argument that gives exactly equal measure to the weight of justice and the weight of mercy simultaneously. Any imbalance — in either direction — fails. They do not relent. They do not tire. They hold their position until the balance is exact or the one before them cannot continue.

Challenge

The Xemaaretti stand between the entrance to the veil and the gate itself. The only passage is an argument of perfect equilibrium — justice and mercy in exact proportion, neither sacrificing one for the other. The gate does not reward righteousness. It rewards exactness.
