The Gate Of Propriety
World
A planet being slowly consumed within the NOS system — stretched into an egg shape by tidal forces, its surface molten, its atmosphere shredding away. The star fills the sky: enormous and consuming. The inhabitants live in underground shelters, knowing they have hours or days before final destruction. The most hostile terrain in the entire journey. Last for a reason.
Veil
The unexpected opposite of a burning, molten, shredding world is absolute cold. Still. Crystalline. Ice that has never melted — ancient beyond reckoning, as though time stopped here long before the planet outside began dying. The silence is the most complete of any veil in the journey. The specific wrongness: a world being destroyed has a veil that is perfectly preserved. Too still. Too cold. Too intact. As though the veil is keeping something in rather than keeping something out. The cold is absolute but not painful — which is its own wrongness.
Gate
The Gate of Propriety demands the diminishment of the self's claim on outcome as the final Solbreth condition. To understand one's place in the web of causality and act from that place — even when it breaks the heart, even when what is appropriate and what is desired are not the same thing — is the last Solbreth requirement before the Eye of the Needle. The gate does not open for the one who has done what felt right. It opens for the one who has done what was right. When this gate is passed, the Solbreth is complete. The Eye of the Needle engages. The Aepura becomes possible.
Beings
The Quirrinaaqs (kwir-ih-NAHKS). Upon entrance into the veil, they manifest automatically — golden beings of light, ethereal, translucent, strikingly beautiful, the most visually arresting beings encountered across all seven gates. Voices like liquid velvet, smooth and incredibly persuasive. They present what appear to be moral and social contracts — reasonable on the surface, valid in their logic, sensible in their construction, consensus-based and seemingly appropriate. What looks appropriate is not always what is appropriate. What appears valid by consensus is not always genuinely right. They are the culmination of every gate that came before — and every layer of Solbreth built across the previous six is required simultaneously to see through them.
Challenge
The Quirrinaaqs stand between the entrance to the veil and the gate itself — and they are the most dangerous beings in the entire journey precisely because they do not appear dangerous. Every contract they present is beautiful. Every argument they make is reasonable. Passage requires seeing through the beauty, resisting the persuasion, refusing the false consensus, and holding every truth built across every prior gate simultaneously. The gate stands on the other side of all of it. So does the Eye of the Needle.
